Addressing Cognitive Tunneling with Haptics

Concept

Most wellness wearables optimize for calm in restful moments — guided breathing when you already have time to breathe. The harder, more valuable moment is the live one: mid-argument, mid-negotiation, mid-crisis, when attention narrows and the body hijacks judgment under stress (the cognitive tunneling effect).

We propose a discreet, Apple Watch-based, haptic grounding application to address this problem. The app uses scheduled haptic cues to help users stay mentally grounded during stressful conversations, intense meetings, conflict, negotiation, or emotionally threatening situations.

A discreet haptic tap can’t be read by the people across the table, but it can reach the wearer precisely when they’ve stopped noticing their own state. The goal isn’t relaxation. It’s restoring agency at the exact moment it tends to slip away, helping the mind recover toward a more open, rational and self-aware state.

User Journey

Before the situation: Start a grounding session and choose haptic pattern, strength, and interval.

During the situation: The watch gives discreet haptic reminders even when the screen is off or wrist is down. At each haptic cue, the user is reminded to soften, breathe, widen attention, and proactively choose rather than react.

After the situation: The app summarizes activation and recovery: heart rate, peak stress moments, elevated duration, recovery, and possible signs that haptics supported recovery.

Over time, users learn what situations trigger tunnel mode and which haptic patterns help them stay grounded.
